ATLANTA- Georgia State volleyball is back on the road this weekend, heading to Chattanooga, Tennessee. The Panthers will take on Jackson State, SIU-Edwardsville, and Chattanooga as part of the Scenic City Showdown. The Showdown will be the final road non-conference tournament for GSU before returning to the Sports Arena next weekend.

Tournament play will open Friday at 3:00 p.m. with GSU facing Jackson State for the third time in program history. The Panthers have won the previous two meetings against the Tigers. Saturday’s doubleheader will see Georgia State taking on SIU-Edwardsville at 10:00 a.m. and Chattanooga at 7:00 p.m. to close out the tournament.

“Each team we will play this week presents a unique challenge for us”, said Panther head coach Sally Polhamus. “The common thread is that each of these teams is gritty and will be ready to play.”

Through seven regular season matches, Georgia State has shown bright spots from the service line, and great physicality defensively.

“Blocking was our number one priority entering this preseason”, said Polhamus. “Volleyball is about controlling the ball, and you do that with defense and from the service line.”

Georgia State’s focus on defense and service has paid off statistically for GSU thus far. The Panthers rank in the top half of the Sunbelt in digs per set, blocks per set, and service aces per set. Sophomore Celeste Friesen is second in the conference averaging 5.08 per set. Crystal Lee, Anna Rantala, and Carley Eiken all rank in the Sunbelt’s top ten for service aces per set.
