ATLANTA- Georgia State volleyball split a pair of matches Saturday in day one of the GSU Invitational. The Panthers opened the 2017 home campaign on a high note with a win over South Carolina State in three sets. In the nightcap GSU would battle hard in a loss to Wofford College (19-25, 22-25, 25-17). Georgia State is now 5-7 on the season, 1-1 at home. Georgia State will wrap up the 2017 non-conference season tomorrow against Davidson.
The Panthers cruised to a straight set victory over South Carolina State in match number one (25-16, 25-9, 25-20). The win was GSU’s first straight set win of the season. Celeste Friesen notched 14 digs in the match, while Džemila Hadžić and Morgan Hash led the Panthers with seven kills apiece. Jha’Meisheia Griffin added four blocks, continuing her great play at the net.
In match number two, Georgia State and Wofford battled in a seesaw first set, but the Terriers would pull away late for a six-point win. The Panthers would get off to a fast 7-1 start in set number two, but Wofford would battle back, and eventually eek out a three point win. The Terriers would gain a big lead early and hang on to win the third set and close out the match. Celeste Friesen had 11 digs in the match, while Morgan Hash added nine kills.
The Georgia State Invitational will conclude tomorrow at the GSU Sports Arena with a pair of matches. Wofford will take on South Carolina State at 11:30 a.m., and the Panthers will look to close out with a win against Davidson at 1:30 p.m. Live video for the GSU match will be available at georgiastatesports.com.
