ATLANTA- Georgia State volleyball closed out the GSU Invitational with a four set win over Davidson on Sunday afternoon. The Panthers defeated the Wildcats 25-23, 20-25, 25-23, 25-20. The win improved GSU to 6-7 on the season, and gave the Panthers a 2-1 record in the tournament.
The first set saw Davidson get out to a 20-15 lead, but Georgia State would battle back to tie the match at 22 before taking control en route to a 25-23 win. The Wildcats raced out to a 12-4 lead inset two. Georgia State would fight to cut the lead to four, but Davidson would hold on for a 25-20 set victory. Davidson would post a 20-15 lead in the third, but five straight Panther points, including four aces from Crystal Lee tied the game at 20. A kill from Džemila Hadžić would give GSU 23-22 lead that they wouldn’t look back from to win set three 25-23. The Panthers led the entire way in a close fourth set, notching an impressive 21 kills to shut the door on the Wildcats.
“The stretch of aces by Crystal was a huge turning point in the match”, said coach Sally Polhamus. “We weren’t able to find our offense, so instead we were able to attack from the service line. In the fourth set our offense was solid, with 21 kills everyone was an option.”
Contributions came from all over in the GSU win. Sydney Stroud had a team high 16 kills, while Džemila Hadžić added 11 in just three sets. Crystal Lee notched 10 kills and 10 digs for her third double double on the season. Celeste Friesen and Sarah Renner came up big for the Panthers with 22 digs and 42 assists, respectively.
The win wrapped up Georgia State’s thirteen-match non-conference slate. The Panthers will open up a sixteen-match Sunbelt schedule next weekend at the GSU Sports Arena. Georgia State will host University of Louisiana-Monroe Friday night, and welcome Louisiana to the Sports Arena on Saturday. Both matches are set for a 6:00 p.m. start time and will be available to watch live on georgiastatesports.com.
