ATLANTA- Autumn is here, and so is the conference portion of play for Georgia State volleyball. The Panthers open up a sixteen-match Sun Belt schedule this weekend by hosting University of Louisiana-Monroe, and Louisiana at the GSU Sports Arena. GSU has won four of their last six matches, finishing the non-conference portion of the schedule with a 6-7 record.

The Panthers will look to build upon a 2-1 home record that was boosted by wins against South Carolina State and Davidson last weekend. Sun Belt play will officially kickoff Friday when GSU welcomes UL-Monroe (4-13) to town for a 6:00 p.m. start. Georgia State looks to improve on a 6-1 all-time record against the Warhawks. Twenty-four hours later GSU will take the court against Louisiana (6-7). The Panthers are looking to avenge last September’s loss to the Ragin’ Cajuns.

“Our season is broken up into two sections, and everything that we have worked toward has led up to conference play”, said Panther coach Sally Polhamus. “We love that we are starting Sun Belt play at home, and we know how important protecting our home court is in this conference.”

Multiple Panthers enter conference play with impressive individual stats on the season. Sophomore libero Celeste Friesen is second in the conference, racking up 4.77 digs per set; while junior Crystal Lee’s 26 service aces are tops in the Sun Belt. Three Panthers (Sydney Stroud-125, Lee-121, Morgan Hash-101) have registered at least 100 kills through thirteen matches. Both Sarah Renner (7.66), and Carley Eiken (6.44) rank in the Sun Belt’s top ten in assists per set. As a team, GSU is in the top half of the conference in hitting percentage, opponent hitting percentage, aces, and digs per set.

Admission to both of this weekend’s matches is free of charge. If you are not able to make it out to the GSU Sports Arena, live stats and video will be available for all GSU home matches on georgiastatesports.com.
