ATLANTA - Basketball standout D’Marcus Simonds is the Georgia State Student-Athlete of the Week, powered by the U.S. Marines, after leading the Panthers to a pair of wins to move into second-place in the Sun Belt Conference standings.
Simonds averaged 24.5 points, 6.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 3.0 steals in the two victories, which pushed Georgia State’s winning streak to seven straight games as the Panthers (16-6, 7-2 Sun Belt) finished January undefeated.
The sophomore guard opened the week with his second-straight double-double and fourth of the season with 29 points and 10 rebounds in an 81-75 win against Sun Belt preseason favorite UT Arlington. He dished out five assists, swiped five steals and blocked two shots in 39 minutes.
On Saturday, Simonds finished with 20 points, three assists and a pair of rebounds while shooting 8-of-13 from the floor in a 54-50 win over then second-place Texas State. He scored 10 of his 20 points in the final 3:36 of the game to spark a 10-2 run and lead GSU from down four to up four.
For the season, Simonds is averaging a Sun Belt-best 21.3 points per game, along with 5.5 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game.
