COLUMBIA, S.C.- GSU Beach split a pair of matches at day two of the Gamecock Grand Slam. The Panthers were defeated 4-1 by number one ranked Pepperdine, and earned a 5-0 sweep over Jacksonville State.
Georgia State dropped the morning dual to top-ranked Pepperdine. The Waves defeated the Panthers 4-1, but GSU did earn a victory in the number one position. Graduate students, and twins, Teegan and Annika Van Gunst won a three set decision in the duo’s first appearance playing as a pair.
In the afternoon match the Panthers swept Jacksonville State for the second time this season. The Van Gunst sisters earned their second win of the day, this time in straight sets. Mattie Johnson and Meagan McCall boosted their record to 4-0 in the number three spot in the lineup with a two-set victory.
The Panthers will return home for a full weekend at the GSU Diggin’ Duals tournament next week. GSU will face Jacksonville State and North Florida on Friday, and take on ULM and Mercer Saturday afternoon. Senior Day festivities will take place before the 5:00 p.m. Saturday dual against Mercer.
