ATLANTA- Spring is in the air and that means it is time to hit the beach. The Panthers will be back in the sand this weekend kicking off the 2019 season Friday in Deland, Florida at the Stetson Spring Fling. GSU enters the season ranked No. 13 in the AVCA Coaches Poll and No. 14 in the Dig Magazine Poll.
Georgia State faces the No. 17/15 Stetson Hatters at 8:00 a.m. Friday morning and will take on Eckerd at noon. On Saturday the Panthers meet St. Leo before wrapping up the weekend with a battle against No.10/12 Florida International.
The Sandy Panthers are led by a quartet of 15-dual winners from the 2018 season in Preseason All-CCSA selection Brooke Weiner (26), Georgia Johnson (21), Olivia Stasevich (18), and Kate Novack (15). Seven other players return from last year’s 24-win team.
Seven newcomers including freshmen Maddy Delmonte, Kelly Dorn, Bailey Hatchett, and Becky Tresham will look to make an immediate impact. Also joining the team will be Kennesaw native and UAB transfer Kaylee McClure, graduate transfer Cara Guthrie, and four-year Georgia State indoor volleyball player Anna Rantala.
“With so many newcomers we are really excited to see our growth throughout the season,” said head coach Beth Van Fleet. “It will be fun to test our strengths against other teams, and to see how we respond to each dual and continue to grow to put ourselves into the best position entering the CCSA Tournament. “
Georgia State also welcomes back a familiar face in volunteer assistant coach Jansen John. John, (maiden name Jansen Button) was one of the most successful athletes in program history, earning 2015 AVCA All-American honors. “We are so excited to welcome Jansen back, she helped build the foundation of this program and it is truly amazing to have her impart her wisdom to the next group of student-athletes,” said Van Fleet.
