*Georgia State opened up the 2019 season by splitting a doubleheader in Deland, Florida Friday morning.
*GSU defeated Eckerd 5-0 in the second match of the day to earn their first victory of the 2019 season.
*The Panthers will close out the Stetson Spring Fling with a pair of afternoon matches tomorrow.
DELAND,Fla.- Georgia State beach volleyball split a pair of matches at the Stetson Spring Fling on opening day of the 2019 season Friday morning. GSU was defeated by Stetson, before rallying to defeat Eckerd 5-0 in Deland, Florida.
The Panthers would drop the season opener 5-0 to host Stetson. After dropping set one, Olivia Stasevich and Maddy Delmonte would win the second game 23-21 before falling in the deciding third frame 15-9.
The Sandy Panthers would bounce back in the second match of the day defeating Eckerd 5-0 in afternoon play. GSU took a 1-0 lead via default in the five flight, and would quickly double the margin with a 21-4, 21-8 win by Kate Novack and Kaylee McClure. State would clinch the victory as Stasevich and Delmonte dominated to a 21-8, 21-15 win, giving the Panthers a 3-0 lead.
On court one, Georgia Johnson and Eden Hawes dropped the first set before taking the next two to give GSU a 4-0 lead. Brooke Weiner and Kelly Dorn would close things out with a 22-20, 21-14 win on court two. Dorn, Delmonte, and McClure all earned their first career wins at GSU in the Panthers victory over Eckerd.
GSU Beach is back at it tomorrow for day two of the Stetson Spring Fling. The Panthers will face St. Leo at noon before battling CCSA rival FIU at 4:00 p.m.
