DELAND,Fla.- No. 13 Georgia State beach volleyball halved Saturday afternoon’s doubleheader at the Stetson Spring Fling, defeating St. Leo 5-0, but falling to No. 10 FIU by the same count. The Sandy Panthers leave Deland with a 2-2 record to start the season.
GSU dominated the early session, defeating St. Leo 5-0 without surrendering a set. Kate Novack and Kaylee McClure took a 21-11, 21-17 win to put the Panthers up 1-0. After Becky Tresham and Maddie Gordon gave GSU a 2-0 lead with a win on court five, Georgia Johnson and Eden Hawes clinched the victory with a 21-10, 21-18 win on court one.
After dropping set one 21-18, Gordon and Tresham would come back to win game two by the same count, forcing a deciding set. However, the duo would fall 15-11 in the third giving FIU the win on court five. GSU would be unable to push past two games on the other four courts, falling 5-0 to No. 10 FIU.
Next weekend the Panthers head to the Lone Star State for the Horned Frog Challenge beginning Friday morning. GSU will take on TCU and Tulane of the CCSA as well as Missouri State and Grand Canyon over the course of the two day event.
