ATLANTA- No. 17 Georgia State beach volleyball split a pair of CCSA duals against top-20 teams Friday at the Seminole Beach Bash in Tallahassee, Florida. The Panthers fell 3-2 to No. 8 FIU 3-2 in the morning session before coming back to defeat No. 16 FAU with a 5-0 sweep.

The pairs of Brooke Weiner and Kate Novack in the three flight, and Ashley McGinn and Kelly Dorn on court five were both undefeated on the day. The wins were the fifth and sixth straight for both duos.

In the opener the Panthers quickly fell behind 1-0, but McGinn and Dorn would take a three set win on court five to even the dual. GSU would drop the point on court one as courts two and three went to a third game.

Weiner and Novack would take the third game 15-12, but Eden Hawes and Maddy Delmonte would fall in an extremely tight 16-14 affair.

“You can only have your heart truly broken once or twice a year,” said coach Beth Van Fleet. “We’ve already been through that. Now we play. We play freely and fearlessly. We have nothing to lose.”

The Panthers did play fearlessly in the afternoon affair as McGinn and Dorn would again win on court five to give GSU a 1-0 lead. Becky Tresham and Maddie Gordon made it 2-0 with a three set win.

Novack and Weiner would take the match in two games on court three to give State a 3-0 advantage and clinch the dual. Hawes and Delmonte took a pair of 21-18 sets putting the Sandy Panthers up 4-0 moments before Olivia Stasevich and Georgia Johnson finished the sweep winning in three games.

“FAU played very well and challenged our offense,” said Van Fleet. “We have been working to play at our potential consistently and were able to do that today.”

Georgia State will look to finish the weekend strong with an 11:00 a.m. matchup with the No. 3 Florida State Seminoles on Saturday morning. Live stats will be available for the dual via the link on our schedule page, and as always you can watch the action live on our Periscope feed.
