ATLANTA - Georgia State out-hit UTA Friday in Game 1 of this weekend's three-game series, but the Mavericks defeated the Panthers 6-3.
Georgia State recorded 10 hits compared to UTA's 8, but GSU stranded 10 runners on base.
UTA made the best out of two GSU errors with four of their six runs being unearned.
Mallory Parson got the start in the circle for GSU and went 3.0 innings, allowing one run on two hits. Emily Soles threw the next 3.0 innings also holding UTA to just one earned run. Savannah Freeman pitched the top of the seventh and didn't allow an earned run.
UTA took the lead on a solo home run in the top of the second. Remington Hasty evened the score in the bottom of the fourth with a sacrifice fly that scored Kalynn Hicks.
The Mavericks took control with four runs in the top of the fifth and added an insurance run in the top of the seventh.
The Panthers battled back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth. Alyssa Brumelow singled in a run and then Hicks picked up an RBI on a sac fly.
Reagan Morgan, Caitlin Ray, Brumelow and Kristin Hawkins each had two hits in the game.
Ray pushed her hitting streak to five games.
