Smith, Cheney Homers Power Opening Day Win

ATLANTA -- Josh Smith and Griffin Cheney homered to lead Georgia State to a 13-2 Opening Day victory over Purdue Fort Wayne Friday at the GSU Baseball Complex.

Will Mize and Kyle Riesselmann each had three hits and an RBI for the Panthers (1-0), who won on Opening Day for the eighth time in the last 10 years. Max Ryerson and Kyle Hilton drove in two runs each.

Three GSU pitchers combined to allow three runs on just four hits with 11 strikeouts.

Starter Brandon Kaminer, a graduate transfer from LSU, pitched four hitless, scoreless innings in his GSU debut. After allowing his first hit in the fifth, he gave way to the bullpen and was not involved in the decision. He allowed one run on one hit with four strikeouts.

Chad Treadway (1-0) struck out four in two innings for the win, and then Duncan Lutz closed the game with three scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and striking out three, to earn the save.

Georgia State jumped in front with five runs in the second inning as Hilton delivered a two-run single, and then three more runs scored on wild pitches, including one on which DeAngelo Abboud scored from second base..

Hilton, the sophomore catcher who missed most of last season due to injury, also picked two runners off first base.

Smith led off the third inning with his blast to left field, and then Cheney drove one to straightaway center to lead off the fifth inning and extend the Panthers' lead to 7-1.

Georgia State added two runs in the seventh on Ryerson's single and three more in the eighth on RBI by Mize, freshman Jesse Donohoe in his first career at-bat and Riesselmann.

Jack Lang hit a solo homer to lead Purdue Fort Wayne (0-1).

The series continues with a doubleheader Saturday beginning at 1 pm.
