School-Record 3 HR for Cheney in 6-1 Win at No. 15 Clemson

Fifth Win Over Top 15 Opponent in Last Two Seasons

CLEMSON, SC -- Griffin Cheney tied the Georgia State record with three home runs to lead the Panthers to a 6-1 victory at No. 15 Clemson Tuesday at Doug Kingsmore Stadium, GSU's fifth win over a Top 15 opponent over the last two seasons.

Cheney hit a 2-run homer in the first inning and then solo homers in the third and eighth innings to back a strong performance by the GSU (11-6) pitching staff as right-handers Camren Landry, Chad Treadway and Joseph Brandon combined for 14 strikeouts.

"What can you say about Griffin Cheney? And we pitched really well and played great defense. It takes a great team effort to beat a Top 15 team on the road, and that's what we got tonight,"  head coach Brad Stromdahl said. "This gives us great momentum as we go into conference play this weekend."

Cheney, the super senior shortstop from John's Creek, equalled the GSU single-game record held by six other players, most recently Nic Wilson in 2014 vs. South Alabama. He now leads the Sun Belt with eight home runs on the season.

Landry, the GSU starter, stuck out eight in 4.1 innings, allowing one run on five hits. Treadway (3-0) relieved him in the fifth and pitched 2.2 scoreless inning with three strikeouts to earn the victory. Brandon finished the game with two scoreless frames, ending it with his third strikeout.

Georgia State jumped in front in the first inning on Cheney's 2-run homer, a line drive shot to left field.

The Panthers extended their lead in the second as Josh Smith singled and stole second, and after a walk by Dalton Pearson, Max Ryerson singled to bring home Smith for a 3-0 advantage.

Cheney's second homer, a solo shot in the fourth, made it 4-0.

Clemson (14-2) threatened in the second, loading the bases with two outs, but Landry escaped the jam by striking out Dylan Brewer to end the inning. The Tigers got one in the third to pull within 4-1 and had runners at first and second with one out when Landry induced an inning-ending double play.

Then Cheney provided insurance with his third homer, a mammoth blast to left field, in the eighth. Caleb Stewart followed with an RBI single for the final margin.

Georgia State has won seven of its last eight games as the Panthers open Sun Belt Conference this weekend, hosting Little Rock at the GSU Baseball Complex beginning Friday at 4 p.m.
