Postgame Interview
Freshman Carrie Williams
ATLANTA, Ga. -- Georgia State junior Rebecca Roles' single in the bottom of the sixth inning drove in freshman Carrie Williams to give the Panthers the 1-0 victory and three-game sweep against the Towson Tigers.
With the sweep, GSU (35-17, 14-7 CAA) now awaits the announcement of its opponent for the first round of the CAA Championships, which begin on Wednesday in Hempstead, N.Y. The Panthers will either face the Tigers (33-21, 10-11 CAA) or James Madison at a time to be determined. CAA regular-season champion Hofstra rounds out the four-team field. The 35 regular season wins is the most since 2008 when the Panthers had 37.
The game marked the final home game for five GSU seniors: Rachel Cunningham, Lauren Fetters, Danielle Roddy, Lily Skelton and Elizabeth Thomas.
A Skelton walk began the sixth before a pair of strikeouts brought Roles to the plate with two outs. Williams, who pinch ran for Skelton when she reached base on the walk, stole second on Roles' first pitch. Roles then promptly slugged a Katie Lingmai (12-9) pitch up the middle and Williams slid around the tag at home to give the Panthers the winning run.
A trio of pitchers gave GSU the shutout. Picking up the win was sophomore Erin Collins (4-2) who pitched a single inning allowing only a walk. Sophomore Alana Thomas earned the save (3) starting the game and eventually ending it allowing only four hits. Elizabeth Thomas hurled the middle innings allowing no hits or walks in two innings of work.
GSU only had three hits, with Roddy, Cassie Boese and Roles each producing a hit. Towson's Stef Streets had a pair of hits.
