ATLANTA -- In rainy conditions on a water soaked
field, the Georgia State women's soccer team lost a thrilling game against the
Delaware Blue Hens on Sunday, Sept. 26 at Panthersville. Despite goals by juniors Lindsay Mortellaro and Erinique Owens, Delaware (5-5, 1-1) came back
to score in the last seconds of the match to capture the victory. The loss
drops Georgia State to 7-3-1 and 1-1 in the Colonial Athletic Association.
Mortellaro notched the
first goal of the game, her second on the season, with an assist from
freshman defender Alyssia Feronti. Owens completed the second goal with an
assist from sophomore midfielder Jocelyn Baker to take Owens to four goals on
the season. Senior goalkeeper Heidi Blankenship played almost the entirety of
the game, recording four saves, until getting injured with less than three
minutes of regulation. Junior goalkeeper Kellianne Collins stepped in to finish
the final minutes of play.
Just over seven
minutes into the first half, play was suspended due to inclement weather conditions.
Both teams endured over 90 minutes of lightning delay before returning to the
field.
When play resumed,
the Panthers were quick to score off of a free kick from a Delaware foul in the
12th minute. Feronti lined up 25 yards out and sent the perfectly-placed
ball in front of the goal. Mortellaro got a foot on it and sent it past Delaware's
goalkeeper into the right corner of the net to put the Panthers up 1-0.
The Blue Hens
answered just under two minutes later when forward Ali Miller fired a shot from
20 yards out that got past Blankenship to even the score 1-1. Neither team was
able to score before time ran out in the first half and the score remained 1-1
at halftime.
In the second half,
the Panthers pulled ahead in the 67th minute when Owens booted a
ball sent in from a corner kick taken by Baker. Owens shot scooted past the
Delaware keeper in the far corner of the net to give Georgia State a 2-1 lead.
Delaware once again
found an equalizer 10 minutes later in the 77th minute. The Blue
Hens' Tania Domingos sent a pass from the right corner of the 18 yard box to
teammate Morgan Warrington. Even though Blankenship got a hand on it,
Warrington's shot found its way by the near post into the left corner of the
net.
Delaware
scored the game-winner with less than one minute remaining on the clock. At the
89:27 minute mark, Miller crossed a ball from the left side where Delaware's
Amy Pickard was waiting to head it in past Collins. With only 30 seconds left
to find their third goal, the clock ticked to zero and Delaware walked away
with the 3-2 victory.
Georgia
State will return to the pitch on Thursday, Sept. 30 when it faces William and
Mary at 2 p.m. in Panthersville.
