Home Run Derby Results in Two Losses for Softball

PANTHERSVILLE, Ga. — Offense was in no short supply as a total of eleven home runs were hit as Georgia State (20-10, 0-2) dropped both sides of a doubleheader to visiting Hofstra (7-12, 2-0) Saturday afternoon at the Robert E. Heck Softball Complex.

Game One: GSU 6, Hofstra 8

The teams combined for 14 runs on 16 hits including seven that left the park. Georgia State accounted for three of the home runs and seven hits.

Jessica Clifton started the hit barrage with a solo homer in the bottom of the first inning. After a Lauren Coleman walk, Callie Alford followed with her fourth homer of the season, which also gave Alford 20 RBI on the season.

The Pride tied the game with a solo homer in the second and two runs on a pair of hits in the third. A pair of solo homers in the fifth inning gave Hofstra a 5-3 lead.

In the sixth inning, pitcher Olivia Galati hit a three run home run to extend that lead to 8-3.

Paige Nowacki answered with a three run blast to trim the Pride lead to two. Brenna Morrissey and Clifton had both reached to start the inning with a pair of singles.

Kaitlyn Medlam took the loss out of the bullpen after giving up five runs in her 1.2 innings pitched. Starter McCall Langford took a no-decision after leaving in the second inning and re-entering in the sixth.

Game Two: GSU 0, Hofstra 16

Hofstra scored 10 runs on seven hits, including four more home runs in the second inning and would eventually take the second half of the doubleheader 16-0 in five innings.

The Pride compiled 17 hits in the ballgame, scoring one run in the first, two in the fourth and three in the fifth. Seven Hofstra batters registered multiple hits in the game. 

Alana Thomas exited the game only 1.1 innings into the start after giving up eight runs on seven hits. Reliever Erin Collins allowed the eight remaining runs in her 3.0 innings pitched.

The Panthers narrowly avoided being no-hit by Pride pitcher Olivia Galati when Taylor Scarpantonio got a single with two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Georgia State concludes the three-game CAA series this Sun., March 26 at noon in Panthersville.
