Sweep Complete After Softball Downs Towson 4-0

PANTHERSVILLE, Ga. — With a 4-0 win Sunday afternoon, Georgia State softball (23-11, 3-3) completed the sweep of visiting Towson (15-17, 2-4) for the Panthers' first CAA series win of 2012.

The Panthers put up four runs in the bottom of the first inning and then cruised to the victory by posting their eighth shutout of the season. Those runs give GSU a total of 39 scored in the first inning through 34 games.

The first six Panthers to the plate registered hits, including five singles and a three run homer by Callie Alford. The freshman now has 28 RBI, including eight in the past two games. She is also now tied with Paige Nowacki for the team lead in home runs with five.

The Panthers struck for nine hits total on the day to bring their total to 26 on the weekend. GSU pitchers only allowed one run in the series, which was unearned.

Kaitlyn Medlam pitched 4.1 innings in her 8th win, also picking up three strikeouts. She combined with reliever Erin Collins for the shutout.

The Tigers threatened in the top of the seventh after a single by Kelli Lyons and a double by Hailey Balk put runners at second and third with one out. Collins induced a ground out and a pop out by the next two batters to end the game.

Two more stolen bases for Whitney Phillips gives her four in the past two games and the team lead with eight on the season.

Georgia State next travels to Greenville, S.C. for a doubleheader against Furman, who GSU already defeated once this season 2-0 back in February.
