ATLANTA--Georgia State moved past the midway point of spring practice with session number eight Tuesday morning at the GSU Practice Complex.
GSU offensive coordinator John Bond discussed the progress of his unit so far this spring.
"We've definitely gotten better this spring," said Bond, the veteran coordinator entering his fifth season at Georgia State. "Honestly, everyone has picked up the up-tempo, no-huddle stuff more quickly than I expected. We are trying to generate more possessions and more scoring opportunities."
The Panthers continue to work with three quarterbacks this spring in junior Kelton Hill, who ended last season as the starter, junior Bo Schlechter, who started four of the first six games of 2011, and redshirt freshman Ben McLane.
"We are still not nearly as consistent at the quarterback position as we need to be," said Bond. "Each of them is making plays, but they are also making mistakes.
"Whoever becomes the most consistent and takes care of the football will take the first snap against South Carolina State."
As expected, the running backs are a deep and talented group. The Panthers' top six ball-carriers return, led by senior Donald Russell, who rushed for 665 yards and nine touchdowns last fall.
"Each one of the running backs has different strengths, so we've got some great competition at that position," said Bond.
As for the offensive line, Bond repeated what Curry has said frequently this spring, that the current unit displays good athletic ability.
"We've got good athletes who can really move their feet, and I like that," said Bond. "We're not very deep, but I've been pleased with those guys."
The Panthers are scheduled to practice Wednesday and Thursday morning leading up to Saturday's Spring Scrimmage, which will take place at 12 noon at the GSU Practice Complex.
