ATLANTA--The Georgia State football team held its first practice in full pads Sunday morning at the GSU Practice Complex, completing the NCAA-mandated five-day acclimatization period.
"It's evident that our team is in good physical condition because they worked so hard in the offseason," said head coach Bill Curry after Sunday's workout. "I'm pleased with our conditioning level, but we need to continue to improve our execution and concentration."
When asked if any individuals had caught his eye so far this preseason, Curry noted that junior cornerback Demarius Matthews and junior wide receiver have "both been outstanding."
Offensive coordinator John Bond said he has seen positive signs from his top three quarterbacks, redshirt freshman Ben McLane, junior Kelton Hill and redshirt freshman transfer Ronnie Bell.
"Ben has thrown the ball pretty well and shown a nice command of the offense," said Bond. "Kelton has improved his knowledge and is doing some good things; he can make plays with the ball in his hand.
"For a young player, Ronnie Bell has really picked up the offense," he continued. "He's got a chance to be a good football player."
Preseason drills continue with a Monday morning workout, followed by the Panthers' first two-a-day practices on Tuesday.
Georgia State opens the 2012 season on Thursday, Aug. 30, when the Panthers host South Carolina State at the Georgia Dome.
