Schlechter Moves to Wide Receiver

ATLANTA-Bo Schlechter, already Georgia State's starting punter, has moved from backup quarterback to wide receiver, head coach Bill Curry announced following Wednesday's practice as the Panthers continue preparations for Saturday's game against Lambuth.

The Panthers host NAIA foe Lambuth Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Georgia Dome for Patriots Day in honor of the Sept. 11 anniversary. For tickets, click here or call 866.GA.STATE.

Schlechter, a redshirt freshman from Wellington, Fla., was one of four quarterbacks who competed for the starting job throughout the preseason. When redshirt freshman Drew Little earned the nod at quarterback, Schlechter moved to a backup role while doubling as the Panthers' starting punter.

However, after starting wide receiver Jordan Giles (Columbia, S.C.) went down with a broken finger in Tuesday's practice, Curry and his staff elected to move Schlechter to wide receiver. He will continue to punt.

"We had been looking for ways to get Bo on the field because he is such a good athlete," said Curry. "When Jordan got hurt, Coach [George] Pugh came to me and said, 'Let's try Bo at receiver.'

"Of course Bo already knows the routes," Curry continued. "He's big, he's fast, he catches the ball well, and he's a terrific athlete. Today was just his first day, but I expect him to do well."

Curry announced that the 6-3, 210-pound Schlechter has been awarded the team's first weekly "Magnanimitas" award. Magnanimitas is a Latin word meaning, "Greatness of Spirit," a principle that Curry stresses with his team.

"We will recognize players for exemplary displays of one of the characteristics of a champion," said Curry. "In Bo's case, it is for his unselfishness."

Schlechter will serve as this week's special teams captain for the second straight game. He will be joined by Little as offensive captain and safety Fred Barnes (Ellenwood, Ga.) as defensive captain.

Giles, a redshirt freshman who caught a 16-yard touchdown pass against Shorter, fractured the middle finger on his right hand and is expected to miss 4-6 weeks.
